Is your charity website ready for mobilegeddon
Incase you missed the news, Google announced a few weeks ago that as from April 21st its next search algorithm update would specifically punish sites that don’t have a mobile friendly design when users are searching using their mobile devices.

Google describes the impending changes here by explaining “we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results”.

The online industry (never knowingly understated) has labeled the change ‘Mobilegeddon’ out of concern over the number of non-mobile optimized sites that will see their organic search rankings tumbling following the algorithm update. Perhaps not without reason, given that eBay apparently lost 80% of its prime rankings following the last update, and research by mobile marketing company Somo suggests that a whole lot of big brand sites such as Channel 4, RyanAir, and The Daily Mail are set to be hit this time around.

The Somo research made use of Google’s own mobile friendly test site that you can find here.

To check that your site passes the test you simply type-in your website URL and hit ‘Analyze’ – and within a minute or so you’ll know if you can rest easy or if you need to send your web team an urgent email.

From a quick check, I did find several big brand charity sites who score a FAIL on this test – so I can only hope their web teams have mobile optimization on their to-do list before April 21st.
